If the thought of scholarly articles makes your eyes cross, check out one of my favorite TED Talks on this subject, “The Surprisingly Dramatic Role of Nutrition in Mental Health” from Julia Rucklidge, PhD, a Professor of Clinical Psychologist in the Department of Psychology at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. She will rock your ever-lovin’ world.
Micronutrients matter. Dose matters. Absorption matters. Breadth of nutrients matter.
“A well-nourished body and brain is better able to withstand ongoing stress and recover from illness.”
“60-80% of people respond to micronutrients.
20 randomized placebo-controlled trials now PROVE we can reduce aggression in prisoners, slow cognitive decline in the elderly, treat depression, anxiety, stress, Autism, and ADHD”
What Does Scripture Say?
Genesis 1:29 – Then God said, “I give you ever seed-bearing plant on the face of the earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.”
The Western diet gets a lot of shade cast on it, and for good reason. The heavily-processed foods that make up the bulk of the “nutrition” have VERY few actual nutrients. Across the board, study after study, the Mediterranean diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, and seeds is FAR superior to the Western fare.
God gave us every seed-bearing plant on the earth for food. With our free will we can choose those foods, or choose those things that are so processed they have merely a shadow of nutrition (and even that is added in!). The health of our body and mind depend on this choice. I know my own fears heighten when my mind turns to the thoughts and attitudes of this world. In the same way, my fears tend to heighten when my body and brain are relying on the man-made, factory assembled food of this day. I feel weighed down and that lie of fear has NO trouble kicking me when I’m down.
What Will You Do?
Exercise. Sleep. Food. That’s what we’ve been going through the last few days. These are critical things to consider for those of us that walk daily with fear. These are tools that you can use to lessen the grip of fear at last see some measure of victory.
Admittedly, these are more challenging tasks and topics than coloring. BUT, I know you will be the better for it. Plus, tomorrow is snuggle an animal day, so hang in there!
