The average person applies well over 150 harsh chemicals to their body every single day and many of those are before breakfast!
Most of these come from 4 things: Soap, Makeup, Shampoo, and Hair Care
Now this is the mind-blowing thing: health and safety data only exists for 15% of all harsh chemicals out there, even though many are known to cause allergies, asthma, hormone disruption, and worse. There are well over 1000 harsh chemicals banned in other countries that are allowed here in the US.
What I’ve learned over the last 3+ years that I’ve been partnering with Young Living for our family’s health is that there are truly EASY and SMALL changes that anyone can make to get the harsh chemicals out of their homes. Essential oils have been a big reason our family has been able to make these changes.
In the video linked below, I share a few key things that anyone researching essential oils should really be aware of.
- what oils are (and aren’t!)
- essential oil purity (and why this is so critical)
- important basic safety information
- how to use essential oils to replace harsh chemicals in your home
- how to use essential oils for your family’s health and wellness
I’ll also tell you where to start if you want to get oils in your home but I also want you to know I am NOT out sell you anything. I’m out to help as many people as possible start tossing out the toxic chemicals and using something better, because it’s something I wish I had paid attention to a LONG time ago.
What are essential oils?
They are the aromatic liquids distilled from plant parts – so, flowers, roots, bark, fruit rinds, and resins. They’re the most powerful part of the plant. Essential oils are part of the plants immune system they have to protect them from disease and injury. They’ve been used for thousands of years to promote health and wellness. As a matter of fact, these aromatic fragrances are mentioned all throughout the Bible. Essential oils are not new.
AROUND our bodies, used as aromatics, therapeutic-grade essential oils can be used to freshen the air in your home, or help you relax after a stressful day, and to create harmony in your overall emotional health.
ON our bodies, therapeutic-grade essential oils can be used to soothe skin, enhance beauty, and reduce the appearance of aging.
IN our bodies, therapeutic-grade essential oils can be used as a dietary supplement to maintain wellness and to support healthy skin, hair, muscles, bones, emotions. They also support the immune, the respiratory, the digestive, the cardiovascular, the endocrine (which are your hormones), and the nervous systems.
So what does this mean for us? LESS TOXICITY. It means creating a home teeming with life and vibrancy, rather than steeped with chemical soup. Pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils mean all that and much, much more. They can be used for a broad range of things everyday, eventually replacing your unsafe products and helping you and your family live more a more natural lifestyle.
The Dirty Secret
So, here is something I want to make sure you understand. Like, REALLY understand! Not all essential oils are created equally. In the United States, from the FDA’s standpoint, there’s actually no official definition of an essential oil.
“Essential Oils” and “Aromatherapy”
There is no regulatory definition for “essential oils,” although people commonly use the term to refer to certain oils extracted from plants. The law treats ingredients from plants the same as those from any other source.
(Source: FDA Website)
So, since there’s no definition, there’s no rating system for essential oils and there are no standards for essential oils. Therefore the label on a bottle really tells you nothing about the quality of the essential oil inside. There are many things essential oil manufacturers may do to stretch their oils. Some essential oils on the market contain synthetics, which are chemicals made in a lab. They can also contain pesticides, fertilizers, chemical extenders, and unadvertised carrier oils.
Many essential oils are also extracted with solvents and that can be cancerous, like hexane. Or, they may dilute it with alcohol. There are also companies that sell left over floral water from the distillation process and label as essential oil!
So, how do you know the difference? How do you know quality of a bottle of oil, if a bottle of leftover floral water and fillers and the bottle of pure–organically-grown–true–therapeutic-grade essential oil can both have a label that says “pure” and “therapeutic grade”??
No one’s regulating it.
The only way to know what kind of oil you’re getting is by doing your research before you purchase. You want a company that has an intimate knowledge of growing, distilling, testing, and bottling essential oils. You want a company that controls and strictly regulates its own processes, from seed to seal — from the non-GMO greenhouse-grown seedlings to the sealed bottle.
Pesticides, pollution, previously farmed land, all of it effects the quality of an oil. Why would you go the extra step of using an oil to get away from harsh chemicals and then use an oil containing harsh chemicals? It would make no sense! Using lesser quality oils for any purpose is never recommended and can be extremely toxic. It’s critical to know how your oils are being produced. This is exactly why I buy my oils directly from Young Living as a wholesale member. [And, why you should too. Please, for the love. I adore Amazon, but don’t purchase “Young Living” oils on Amazon. Young Living does not sell directly online anywhere except their website. Do you know how simple it is to uncap a bottle, tamper with or extend the contents, and put a new replacement cap on?]
Young Living has a Seed to Seal process that promises the integrity of their oils. I have seen firsthand how they carefully monitor production every step of the way from the seeds they plant to the careful, low-temperature steam distillation methods, all the way to sealing the bottle. Check out Seed to Seal for more info.
