Limbic System FAQ

Q: I’ve heard a lot that the limbic system only responds to scent, but I’ve never been able to verify that. Can you explain?

The limbic system is the permanent address of all the feels.

It has a scrapbook of positive and negative memories (the hippocampus) that is guarded by an alarm system (the amygdala).

The scrapbook stores memories based on a common feeling rather than a common thought. So, all the happy memories are in one section, then all the afraid memories are in this other section, etc., and so on. Those emotions are cross-referenced with other things too, such as the literal physical feeling associated with it, and the area of the body where those negative feelings typically reside (grief/lungs, anxiousness/stomach, etc).

(This is why AFT works and you can pull up a seemingly unrelated memory that IS actually related because of how your brain filed the information.)

Now, the alarm system is connected to certain areas of the scrapbook; particularly negative, stressful, and traumatic events. It’s our body’s way of alerting us that something is wrong, that we’ve been here before and it ended badly.

It’s also important to realize that some people’s alarm systems are more sensitive than others. Those with trauma or brain imbalances tend to have a hair-trigger alarm system so that their amygdala is in constant fight or flight, scanning for danger. These people may seem to always be in the feels. The thinking/logical sections of the brain are overridden by the more urgent feelings.

Also, yes, input from any of the senses can set OFF your alarm system. Someone gets too close, something is too loud, something is too smelly, you taste something that triggers a negative association, you see something frightening or traumatic… any sense can trigger the alarm system.

But, only one can switch it off.

Only the olfactory system can connect with the feeling brain (which is being triggered) before it connects with the thinking brain. When I’m triggered, I feel first and think later. For people with a history of trauma, thinking may come MUCH later or not at all. If I’m in deep fight/flight/freeze, there is little that can snap me out of it. This reality has never been more apparent than with my sweet son, who will go to the mat over things that trigger him. I’m not talking about regular stresses and disappointments you can talk yourself down from. I’m talking about a traumatized reaction to an innocuous event. It’s as if there isn’t a choice, because there is no logical thought going into the reaction.

When traumatic stress is truly triggered, it is life or death, you are doing whatever you can to survive. Your brain is telling you to fight or leave and you find yourself acting before you even realize what is happening. That alarm is sounding and turning it off is a challenge. Of course there are ways of retraining the brain and many different psychological approaches. Logic can rule once the incident is over, but the fact remains there will be more triggers. There will be more incidents. There will be more hair-trigger reactions.

Unless, there was a way to halt the process and retrain the brain that lasted.

The most effective, most permanent “off-switch” for that triggered alarm are therapeutic essential oils. The tiny molecules bypass the blood brain barrier and go into the cells. The constituents work like a symphony in the body. The ligands attach to receptor sites that match the same frequency and the cell door opens for business. The molecules do their jobs in the cell, assisting with deleting and restoring correct Information, bringing the body, mind, and spirit in balance.

The best example of this I’ve seen is Trauma Life. Within minutes it halts the fight/flight for our son. Consistent use has meant his past doesn’t dictate his future. He is tasting freedom from the bondage he once was in. He can hear the gentle whisper of truth over the terrible lies.

DAY 20

Yesterday’s Activity: Make a list of your fears. Be as specific as possible. [i.e. death of my ______, losing my job, bankruptcy, my spouse being unfaithful, my kids being ______, etc]

Today’s Activity: Beside each anxiety, write the EMOTION you feel when you think of that fear and the LOCATION of that emotion in your physical body.

Oil: More Release. More Valor. 🙌🏼

This isn’t easy stuff. Emotional work is hard, y’all. Have you ever considered WHY emotional work (going to therapy, for instance) is so often both mentally draining and physically exhausting?

Because the body keeps score.

The thought “I’m afraid of losing my spouse” isn’t just a mental exercise. It corresponds with an emotion. And, that emotion corresponds with a body sensation.

So, fear isn’t “just” fear. It’s the thought “you’ll be alone forever”. It’s the emotion “terrified”. It’s the body sensation of “chest heaviness, throat tightening, heart racing”.

And, at that point, you’re in the moment. You may even have a memory of the last time you felt the same way, either recently or long ago. THIS is when you insert those phenomenal oily tools.

Right at the moment you’ve focused on the fear, you don’t try to explain it away, or cover it in chocolate. You breathe deeply of the (therapeutic) oils you and lean into that memory. You notice what happens. You stay with the process. Most often, people report feeling immediately calmed. Very frequently they report that the body sensation eased and the fearful memory were clinging to faded away.

What Does Scripture Say?

Psalm‬ ‭34:4‬ ‭ – I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

Wait, is it really that simple? Yep. The Lord desires to deliver you! He wants you to walk in the freedom of the Holy Spirit! But, you can’t do that if you’re covered by the cloud of fear. Seek the Lord, friend. See what he says in answer to your fears.

Prayer and AFT are a deadly combination for fear. The action of the oils helps open your mind to receive truth and hear from the Holy Spirit. When they enter the limbic system, the tiny molecules of the essential oil can have an impact on the DNA of cells. Phenols, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes go to work in the structure of the damaged cells (those ones keeping score of trauma from the past) and can cleanse, edit, and restore the cell memory health.

DAY 19

Activity: Make a list of your fears. Be as specific as possible. [i.e. death of my ______, losing my job, bankruptcy, my spouse being unfaithful, my kids being ______, etc]

Oil: Release. Valor. 🙌🏼

Why List Your Fears?

This sounds like a terrible day!! Why in the world would we do this??

In the seclusion of our mind, fear has the illusion of greatness. It’s louder, bigger, and stronger. Silencing the negative voice of fear is impossible unless we first identify it and combat it with our own voice. You gotta tell it who’s boss, so to speak.

Just the act of clearly articulating our fears can make them smaller. Have you ever been thinking or fearing something, and when you try to explain it to someone you realize how silly it sounds? Though, obviously, that’s not the case every time, the fact remains that getting our fears, anxieties, and insecurities into the light of day changes them. When we get it out into the open, our anxious thoughts can become quieter, smaller, and weaker. When we pull fear out of the darkness of our mind and expose it to the light, Truth can reign.

What Does Scripture Say?

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭139:23‬ – Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

As you ask the Lord to search YOU, what will be uncovered?

The thing is, God already intimately knows you – the anxiousness you carry within is not a surprise to him. The significance in this verse is really in the INVITATION. Your heart is already known by God, dear one. What the invitation does is open YOU up to hearing his voice in the midst of those anxious thoughts.

What Will You Do?

For many years, I would confess my anxious thoughts to the Lord, feel better, and go right back to fear again as soon as another disappointment came. I know I’m not alone in that. Likely, that is the story of many of us. It wasn’t that the Lord didn’t move – he absolutely did – it was that my physical body continued to hold onto those fears. My stomach in knots, punch in the gut feeling, tightness in my chest, slumping in my shoulders, numbness in my hands and arms, you name it. Even though my mental and emotional state was in a healthier place, my physical body manifested anxiousness (without any other physical explanation) for more than 30 years.

Though I heard the voice of the Lord, it honestly was not until I began incorporating essential oils into my emotional wellness that I began to see a real shift. With intentionality and prayer, I was legitimately able to face the fears and release the negativity I had held for so long in my physical body.

Astonishingly, this release LASTED. Trauma and abuse no longer held my body, mind, and spirit hostage. It is TRUE freedom from fear.

Using Young Living oils was a game-changing decision for our family, but particularly for my emotional health. I am the gatekeeper of our home, and I had been letting fear slip in for far too long.

As I researched and learned about the effect of trauma on the DNA of cells, I came to understand that you can’t bury feelings, the body keeps score.

And, as I researched and learned about the action of therapeutic-grade essential oils, I came to understand that phenols, sesquiterpenes, and monoterpenes were the KEYS to re-writing that cellular memory.

It was like a bomb dropped in my brain. My fire ignited. I can’t not tell people about this! Fear doesn’t have to reign!

You really can release the past and move forward. I frequently tell people that it’s not that the memory disappears – it’s not a mind zap thing. Using the guided process of Aroma Freedom Technique (AFT), however, it does lose its emotional charge.

You see light breaking through the memory and gain perspective that wasn’t possible in the cloud of trauma. You hear truth that you weren’t even open to in the darkness of fear. It is astounding, life-changing, soul-renewing stuff.

So, today, write down those fears and anxieties. This isn’t a situation where we’re going to ball up the paper and symbolically throw them in the trash (raise your hand if you’ve tried that therapeutic technique).

You’ll need that paper for tomorrow’s activity, and for our AFT Session on Monday evening. If this activity creates anxiousness in you, use Release on your forehead and abdomen or Valor on your wrists to regain calm.

I’ll tell you more tomorrow, but for now, write those things down. I hope by now you’ve seen my heart and my deep desire to help you walk in freedom from fear. Trust me, it is SO worth it.

DAY 17
Activity: Nurture yourself by taking a time out. I love these tips on why “me time” is important to happiness.

Oil: Clarity or Envision. Whether you need focus or inspiration, these are go-to blends for creating brain space.

Why Do We Need Space?
“Mommy is in time out.”

Anyone else do this? Give yourself a time out? Yesterday was one of those days for me. A series of unfortunate events and frustrations led me straight down a path to “hot wreck mom”. It was not pretty. What I needed was a time out – space to collect my thoughts and adjust my attitude. As we say down here in the South, BLESS.

When we fill our days with many things and many people, we can find ourselves crowded out by the urgent. Whether it’s our own sense of urgency or the demands of those around us, panic can set in. The increased stress can give way to the hair-trigger responses informed by our fear. We can quickly spiral from annoyed to out of control. That was my yesterday.

It is a new day. There is no fear of yesterday because my sins are covered. The perfect love of Christ has driven away any sense of fear. His light, driving away that darkness. His peace quieting my heart. His mercies restoring my soul.

Why Does Scripture Say?
‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:18‬ – There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

What Will You Do?
Nurture yourself. We have just a few days left in our FEARLESS challenge. I pray that you have seen Christ’s love – it really is the only antidote to fear.

Maybe nurturing yourself today looks like washing your face and putting on make up. Sometimes 10 minutes of self-care before you have to care for anyone else is the difference between a selfish attitude and a grateful one.

Maybe nurturing yourself today looks like joining our Aroma Freedom Technique call tonight. These video conference calls are done over Zoom and last about an hour. There are a few oils you’ll need for the process – Lavender, Frankincense, and Stress Away. There are several others – Release and Inner Child – that are recommended, but not required. If all you have is the Premium Starter Kit, you can definitely benefit and you’ll be astonished at the emotional relief you feel after going through this simple, gentle process.

Maybe nurturing yourself today looks like scheduling a private Aroma Freedom Technique session at your convenience. You get individualized attention as we use focusing exercises and essential oils to clear the barriers that are keeping you from doing what you really want to be doing. Whether it’s a traumatic memory or simply a nagging voice in your mind, the Aroma Freedom Technique steps lead you to emotional freedom that lasts. Reach out, read more, or schedule a session at
